"If you can’t be with the one you love, love the bot you're with."
Before ChatGPT changed this whole landscape and conversation, I started musing about our changing relationship with chatbots.
1. Human Labor Shortage
The pool of potential workers appears to be permanently smaller than once assumed. Post-pandemic figures suggest the America job force has contracted by 2% compared to pre-pandemic numbers. A lot of people simply won't be coming back to work these jobs.
2. Bots are Being Built Better
For many who resisted the services of the first wave of chatbots and AI assistants (Eliza, Siri, Alexa), conversation designers are innovating at warp speed, particularly in the enterprise arena where there is now a diversified market for chat bots. Customers seeking tech support are finding solutions they need without having to “escalate” to live human. (In one case story, a Nordic insurance company’s chatbot resolved 97% of their internal support queries.).
3. Humans are More Willing to Enter Transitional Spaces Where Resistance to Bots is Subdued.
Microsoft's Clippy was a nuisance, but now we'll readily dance with "Clippy 3.0 "- the dancing robot of Oculus. We’re in a magical transitional space of exhilaration and fun when the human has the headset on; the playing field becomes level with the AI assistants.
Before we know it people will put on their headset to check in at a medical appointment or shop for their next car and thanks to well designed smart chat bots, they will be pleasantly surprised by how speedy, consistence, convenient, and knowledgeable these new automated assistants are.
